A snapshot on the new launches in 2016:

Maruti: to launch a) Vitarra Brezza by March 2016 in the EcoSport category. It is in the <4 metre category, and will face huge competition in the already heated compact SUV segment. A side ways glance reminds one of the Swift with a higher ground clearance.  The pricing would be the key and given that its from MSIL, we expect it to be extremely competitive. It would be launched from the normal Maruti dealerships


  1. b) Ignis: targeted to be launchedtowards the festive season in Sept-Oct 2016: a premium compact, positioned below the Baleno. The difference according to the management is, Baleno is a premium compact car but Ignis is a “premium” in the compact hatchback category. Hence, it would be launched from the Nexa platform


Honda: to launch its 1.5 litre 7- Seater BRV towards the festive season in Sept-Oct 2016. It would be positioned between the CRV and the Mobilio. It is likely to come in both petrol and diesel variants. Expected launch price would be in the range of  Rs15-16 lakhs.


Tata Motors: Tata Motors is expected to launch 3 vehicles in the next 12-15 months:  a) Zica (to be rechristened) to be launched by March 2016—a compact car- hatchback; with pricing to compete with i10 and Celerio.

  1. b) Nexon- in the Ecosport category and likely to be launchedtowards the festive season in Sept-Oct 2016. c) its 7 seater Hexa in 2017—in the SUV segment to be positioned in the Fortuner segment: built on the Aria platform (interestingly, Aria is in the Innova category).  They also showcased their new sporty compact sedan (project code named KITE 5) which would be positioned against the Swift Dzire


Hyundai India: to launch its 5- Seater Tucson- between the Creta and Santa FE. Expected to be between Rs18-20 lakhs in the Honda BRV range.

Some key launches in  other segments included:

HMSI: HMSI has unveiled its Navi and would be priced at 39k (ex-showroom Delhi). Its positioned as a motorcycle for the scooter lovers and targeted for the young aspirants within the age group of 18-21 years. It  has the looks of a motorcycle but tyres of a scooter and is a gearless 2W. We believe it will create a separate niche in the 2W segment given its attractive positioning. However, given that its not a unisex product, it would be have limited acceptability.

VW Ameo: VW has launched this model in the sub 4mtr compact sedan segment and would compete against the Swift Dzire and Honda Amaze. Its priced between Rs6-9 lakhs and some of the key differentiating features in the top end include a touch screen infotainment system, cruise control etc

Renault India: Renault India unveiled its new Kwid with the 1 ltr engine (against the current 800cc) and would be positioned with the Alto K10. This model would also have an AMT option.
